Satprem
Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) is considered one of the greatest spiritual geniuses of the modern age. Born in India, educated at Cambridge, a man of letters and languages, he returns to his native Bengal, and soon after takes up a teaching position in the court of the British Raj. During this time he witnessed the devastating effects of Empire, and it wasn't long after that that he chose to turn his formidable powers of oratory, writing, and organizing to liberate his people from an unjust system of dominance. As a leading political revolutionary within the nationalist movement, he was instrumental in breaking the yoke of colonial control over his country. While imprisoned for his political activities, he underwent another kind of revolution, this time within his own consciousness. The Veil of Ignorance was rent; and as a result of this Nirvanic experience, he realized that any remedy offered at the appearance level of the surface personality could never successfully harmonize or heal the "clash of opposing truths each seeking to fulfill itself."
A series of divine encounters with the likes of Swami Vivekananda and Lord Krishna allayed any doubts as to the path and practice he was destined to undertake. Establishing an ashram in Pondicherry, he began his pioneering work in what he referred to as, Integral Yoga.
Sri Aurobindo's Yoga integrates the valuable discoveries of Western science with the supremely rich and timeless truths of Vedic and Tantric India. Not a clumsy and careless hodgepodge, but an inspired and inspiring Vision that transcends and includes the best that human evolution has to offer. In his book, Sri Aurobindo or The Adventure of Consciousness, Satprem, a student of Aurobindo, gives us a clear and concise summary of his Master's teachings. Aptly titled, it truly plays out as an extraordinary adventure for the reader. Valuable instructions on how to quiet the mind, the various levels of Consciousness, discovery of the "psychic being" or Soul, the "Traveller of the Worlds," and how humankind has the potential to evolve into a Supramental Being-capable of fully integrating and manifesting the Kingdom of God on Earth-are just some of the treasures offered within the pages of this spiritual classic.
To Complement our study of Satprem's book, we will also be savoring and meditating upon selected passages of Savitri, Sri Aurobindo's magnum opus. An epic poem that verbally embodies the esoteric teaching like no other! (Owning a copy is optional).
